Details
- 6061 Aluminum is a precipitation hardening alloy containing magnesium and silicon as primary elements.
- Highly weldable, compatible with TIG (tungsten inert gas) and MIG (metal inert gas) welding.
- After welding, the affected area becomes 6061-0, losing around 80% of its strength.
- Can be re-heat-treated to restore -T4 or -T6 temper.
- Natural aging after welding helps regain some strength.
- Typical filler materials: 4043 or 5356.
- Good machinability in T4 and T6 tempers but harder to machine in the annealed temper.
- Common applications:
- Heavy-duty structures requiring good corrosion resistance
- Truck and marine components
- Aircraft structures (e.g., wings, fuselages)
- Yacht construction
- Bicycle frames and components
- Automotive parts, such as wheel spacers.
